Many will describe dermatitis as simply inflammation
of the skin. For those of us who suffer from dermatitis, we
know that it is much more! Not only is the skin inflamed but, it
can become dry, cracked, sore and bleeding. In some cases so severe
that the sufferer is unable to carry out even normal day to day activities
without experiencing excruciating pain and discomfort. It is a constant
drain both emotionally and physically, and not just for the sufferer
but also family members as well.
Doctors classify dermatitis into three types, depending on the cause
of the inflammation
Irritant contact dermatitis is triggered by exposure to a chemical
that is poisonous (toxic) or irritating to human skin. It is not
an allergic reaction.
Allergic contact dermatitis is an immune reaction that occurs only
in people who are naturally oversensitive to certain chemicals. With
allergic contact dermatitis, the inflammation may not develop until
24 to 36 hours after contact with the substance (allergen). This
is because allergic contact dermatitis involves the body's immune
defences, a process that takes some time. Skin allergies vary from
person to person.
Atopic dermatitis, or eczema as it is commonly known, is a chronic,
recurring inflammatory skin disease that is most common in people
with a family history of an atopic disorder: asthma, hay fever etc.
Eczema is characterized by patchy, dry, itchy and scaly areas of
skin. In severe cases of eczema, the skin can weep, bleed, and crust
over
Symptoms
Depending on the
cause symptoms of contact dermatitis may vary slightly, :
Irritant contact dermatitis — In mild cases, there may be
only mild redness of the skin. More severe cases may cause skin swelling,
blistering or even ulceration. Symptoms usually begin immediately
after exposure to the harmful substance, and they are limited to
areas of the skin that have been touched, splashed, covered by or
immersed in the irritant.
Allergic contact dermatitis — When contact dermatitis is caused
by an allergic reaction, it usually causes skin redness, blistering
and severe itching. Because allergic contact dermatitis is a form
of delayed hypersensitivity, symptoms may not appear for several
hours after exposure to the allergen. The location and pattern of
the skin reaction may provide clues to the cause of the problem.
If symptoms of either type of dermatitis are not treated, and the
skin continues to be exposed to the substance that is triggering
the skin reaction, contact dermatitis may become a long-lasting (chronic)
condition. In chronic contact dermatitis, the skin eventually becomes
thick, scaly and dry, with colour changes and areas of hair loss.
I fully appreciate, not only the physical aspects of having a condition
such as dermatitis, but also the emotional impact the condition has
on you and your family. That is why I manufacture Derma Shield. I
believe that dermatitis sufferers deserve the best treatment and
care possible at affordable prices.
Users constantly tell me that their quality of life has greatly
improved since using Derma Shield. It has relieved the pain and constant
suffering that they endure, and they are no longer embarrassed and
self conscious about their dermatitis damaged skin.
Best wishes
